Sele Says...
It's an interesting time for today's starter, Aaron Sele. New team, new league, trying to cement a spot in a rotation after spending some time in the minors. When he takes the mound today to square off with Barry and the Gang, there will be more on the line for Sele than whether or not he becomes part of a perma-looped highlight reel. Still, Sele isn't worried. I had a minute (literally, since he was heading out of the clubhouse to head to the airport) to speak with him on Thursday afternoon, after the loss to Houston. The vet is pretty calm heading into his start. Lack of familiarity with hitters seemed like his biggest concern.
"You just go out there and try to repeat quality pitches and try to keep the ball down. All the basic pitching things. When you're facing a new team, there's a lot of hitters I haven't seen for a while, so you really just try to keep it basic."
As for walking into the circus while still pitching for a spot in the bigs, Sele shrugs it off as part of the game.
"I've been around long enough that all the side stuff is what it is. It's going to be fun. It's going to be fun to see this whole rivalry thing. I did the Red Sox-Yankees thing, so it'll be fun to see the Giants-Dodgers (rivalry)."
With all that's happening on the Perez front, it'll actually be more interesting to see what happens if Sele pitches poorly. Then what do you do? How many bad starts will they give Sele, or Jae Seo for that matter, before feeling the need to put Odalis back in the rotation? Just some fun stuff to think about. The first order of business, assuming he can't be traded, would be actually getting Perez into a game, just to see where he is.
It's not quite Shaq vs. Kobe high drama (thank god), but it is an interesting storyline early this year for the Dodgers.
